It’s the trailer for the new Prince of Persia game. If you haven’t been following this, let me fill you in on the general concept: New console. New storyline. New prince.
According to online reports and developer interviews, the new Prince of Persia will try to incorporate the acrobatic gameplay of the recent PlayStation 2 titles while taking inspiration from the Jordan Mechner classic’s one-on-one duels. The result will be a more tense experience focused around challenging boss fights rather than slicing endless waves of enemy fodder.
As you’ll see in the video, the new prince is scruffy and sarcastic, like a Persian Han Solo. There are also two new gameplay mechanics. First, the prince has a new female friend designed to aid him in combat. Secondly, the prince also has a claw gauntlet which can be used to climb walls, slow vertical descents, and probably aid in battles.
I think it’s good for a series to reinvent itself every few games. The license becomes a springboard for innovative new ideas, rather than a crutch that the developers feel they must lean on to preserve the status quo.
