Need to quickly edit a photo or image but don’t want to download and install a program? Check out CloudCanvas, a fast HTML5-based image editor that runs in your browser.

CloudCanvas is surprisingly robust. It works with both vector and pixel images and integrates with various cloud-based services. It also comes with the typical font-manipulation features like drop shadows and bevels. And for those of you thinking this is just an online version of Microsoft Paint, rest assured that you’ll be able to use precious layers.

Of course, CloudCanvas is nowhere as feature-rich as Adobe Photoshop. On the other hand, a single license for Photoshop costs $700. So it’s really unfair to compare the two. In the end, CloudCanvas just a simple and free browser-based image editor that everyone should bookmark.

Created by Simon Cottee, here’s an intriguing, must-watch documentary about the role of the pixel in video games. I love and create pixel art in my spare time. They’re sharp, abstract, and beautiful.

The funny thing is pixel graphics from the 8-bit and 16-bit era actually looked blurry and rounded on TV screens. So most of what I find beautiful about pixels and sprites are due to handhelds like Nintendo DS and emulation on high resolution monitors. The idea of the crisp, perfect pixel art is based on an idealized version of the past. Nostalgia and all that.

It’s fascinating, in a postmodernist sort of way.

Over at CG Hub, Brazilian artist Manuhell has illustrated a series of zombie Street Fighter characters. So far, he has completed Ken, Chun-li, Guile, Akuma, Ryu, Cammy, Ibuki, Blanka, and Sagat.

The zombie Sagat looks especially ferocious as he has strange spikes protruding from his forearms. There’s also an enlarged heart threatening to take over half his chest, not unlike the classic Resident Evil Tyrants. The funny thing is, I always imagined a zombie Sagat would basically be Nemesis. Both are tall, muscular, one-eyed beasts with a knack for grabbing victims in the face.

You can check out Manuhell’s gallery here.

Robin Dahlberg from Steelhead Studio hand makes jewelry and sells them online. It can be challenging making a living with an online store, especially in this economy. But Dahlberg isn’t just any artist. She likes games.

To ring in the new year, she and her crew made 100 cupcakes, each featuring a unique design from a video game.

Intentional or not, the cupcakes have made a splash. The story is being picked up by a number of major gaming blogs, posted on numerous forums, and even featured on Digg, undoubtedly driving hundreds of thousands of hits to Dahlberg’s site. Who knows? One of those gamers might even purchase some jewelry.

My girlfriend thought it’d be a good idea for us to make some art with tempera paint. So we went to the local drugstore and bought some. I haven’t painted in years. But I do remember is that tempera paint is pretty much the cheapest, most horrible type of paint available. Sure enough, the paint dried too fast and we couldn’t blend or layer the colors effectively. The end result isn’t a complete trainwreck, but like an impressionist painting, you have to view it from a distance.

You may remember my sketches of fantasy creatures from over a year ago, which I eventually turned into sprites with MS Paint. I posted the undead creatures but never completed the demons. To be honest, I lost interest halfway through and the flames on the Balor were too much. Well, here’s what I ended up with.

imp2

With the Imp, it was just a matter of recreating the lines with pixels. I didn’t try anything too drastic here. But as you can see with the blue imp on the right, I fiddled with shadows and colors a bit to make them look more disturbing. The original looked like a gargoyle you’d find in a French cathedral.

erinyes2

The Erinyes or Furies are depicted here. I originally wanted her to look somewhat barbaric, hence the rags and horns. But something about it just didn’t look intimidating enough. So I ultimately redesigned the outfit to make her resemble a more Roman soldier.

shedu2

Ah, the Shedu. The final drawing didn’t look more ape-like than I had hoped, but I did like the colors. The mistake here is that I made the horns too short.

helhound2

Here’s the Helhound, which is basically a big dog with a fiery tail. The head was the hardest part to color and shade in MS Paint, so I’m glad I didn’t originally draw Cerberus.

succubi2

Uh-oh, bewbies. Hide the children. I contemplated creating the grotesque shadow for the Succubus but stopped when I realized it would basically erase her figure and hide her wings and tail. These creatures are supposed to be seductive and the shadow was meant to convey her devilish qualities. The same effect was achieved by giving the sprite a devilish smirk.

There’s a post at 4 color rebellion about Konami’s new artwork for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. This is a game that I’ve written quite a bit about this year. To recap, SH:SM is the Wii remake of the first Silent Hill game. Rather than simply update the graphics, the folks at Climax Studios have completely revised the plot, turning the cursed town into an icy hell, and framing the story as a counseling session for protagonist Harry Mason to recover repressed memories.

The new artwork is interesting. But as you’ve seen in screenshots and YouTube videos, the characters’ appearance changes based on the Harry’s answers in the psychological evaluation at the start of the game. For example, tough cop Cybil Bennett might be a warm, homely brunette in a brown jacket or a stone cold bitch in a navy blue uniform. The artwork released are likely just one of many possible incarnations of each character.

With that in mind, here are some observations (after the jump):

cheryl

First, here’s Cheryl on a swing set. The image is unsettling because the girl’s face looks far more mature for her age. Her brows and eyes make her look devious, like she’s planning your demise. Interestingly enough, this image has been shopped with icicles to comprise the game’s cover art. Also, I’m not sure what to make of the psychedelic headband and bracelets.

cybil

The second image is Cybil. Or rather, this is the nice, homely Cybil. Interestingly enough, her resemblance to Cheryl is uncanny, particularly the eyes, hair, and face shape. My theory is that if you answer the psych test in a way that suggests you’re very devoted father, the characters will all resemble Cheryl a little bit. Then again, maybe the character artist doesn’t have much range (see: Nomura, zippers).

dahlia

Dahlia has been reimagined quite a bit. Okay, that’s an understatement. She has been transformed from an old crone to an 80s street walker. Maybe if you answer the psych test in a way that makes you an unfaithful husband, the characters will all look ‘sexy.’ For example, GameInformer has an image of the ‘sexy’ Cybil. Her shirt is unbuttoned and she has enormous cleavage.

We haven’t seen any other incarnations of Dahlia yet. But if they’re sticking to the original plot where Dahlia is the leader of The Order, it stands to reason there’s more to this hooker than meets the eye. Interestingly enough, her short blond hair makes her look a little like Heather from Silent Hill 3. Of course, Heather is technically Dahlia’s daughter, so… that makes sense. I guess.

drk

The doctor looks incredibly evil. He has a frown. His picture is filled with shadows. There’s a hellish red glow in the background. His fingers are pressed against one another, suggesting an evil scheme. The dilapidated background brings me hope that the hellish, rusty Otherworld will return in some fashion. However, I’m confused. Is this supposed to be Dr. Kaufmann or the psychiatrist who attempts to help Harry recover his memories? Or are they the same character? His official name is Dr. K.

harry

Harry looks pretty hopeless. Moving on.

lisa

The new Lisa Garland wears scrubs rather than a traditional nurse’s outfit. She also has red hair now. I’m curious what her new role in the game will be.

michelle

The last image is of Michelle, a new character. Her red dress suggests seduction and kind of reminds me of the images of ‘God’ in the Silent Hill 3 church. The hellish opening in the curtain behind her is also rather foreboding. According to Worthplaying, Michelle meets Harry at her high school reunion and decides to aid him in finding Cheryl. A sexy and mysterious woman tagging along? Shades of Maria from Silent Hill 2, perhaps? Or perhaps there are also homely versions of Michelle in the game that appear if you answer the psych test differently.

So what do I make of all this? How will the game fit in with the overall story established in the other Silent Hill games? My theory is that The Order is messing with Harry’s mind. There will likely be a major twist somewhere down the road where Harry starts to see ‘the truth’ or the doctor outs himself as one of the bad guys. I find it interesting that the majority of the game that we’ve seen takes place on the icy streets. As fans of the original know, walking the streets is a relatively small segment of the actual game. What information has been revealed about the plot is likely just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
