Boxing Day In London, Part 1

Boxing day brought about the first day of blue skies since I’ve been here and it was marvelous. You can’t tell from this picture, of course. It was taken early morning at the southeast entrance of Hyde Park. No, the picture was not doctored with Photoshop and I didn’t have any weird ‘color filters’ on my camera.

Hit the jump for additional pictures from our exploration of Hyde Park on Boxing Day.

This is a statue of Achilles. It was built as a tribute to Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, from ‘The Women of England.’ I guess this Wellesley fellow was a pretty popular guy. I hope when I return to London in the future, I don’t see a statue dedicated to Rob Pattinson.

There’s a carnival in the park called Winter Wonderland, filled with rides and carnies.

Here’s the inside of Winter Wonderland. It started drizzling, so we actually left for an hour to nearby Harrods to check out the crazy lines of tourists waiting to buy overpriced garments and gawk at celebs.

On the way to Harrods, we came across this stone. The carving underneath the words ‘Holocaust Memorial Garden’ is a passage from Lamentations in both Hebrew and English.

After we got back from Harrods, we crossed the football field and ended up here by the Serpentine.

I don’t remember where we saw this picture, but it’s supposed to commemorate the cavalry.

Princess Diana Memorial Fountain.

This is near the fountain. It’s a swan. As you can see, the rain had stopped and the gray haze cleared up a little.

This is the other side of the bridge, which is Kensington Gardens. Of course, Kensington Palace is where Princess Diana lived.

This is a little area where people can feed the swans.

This is Kensington Gardens. It’s winter so all the trees are dead.

Statue of Peter Pan.

This is the fountain at the northern part of Kensington Gardens.

Traveling back to Hyde Park via a northern path, desperately seeking a drinking fountain, we came across this view of the Winter Wonderland Ferris wheel from the opposite side of the Serpentine.
