Taiwan Tabloid Apple Daily’s Tiger Woods Cartoons Win Journalism

Maybe you’ve heard of Apple Daily, a popular tabloid news website in Taiwan. They’ve exposed corrupt politicians, dug up tons of celebrity dirt, and even been raided by the Taiwanese government (you know, standard tabloid stuff). But now, Apple Daily has become famous outside of Asia for its use of salacious 3D reenactments in news stories.

Who needs actual footage of Tiger Woods cheating on his wife when someone can just create something that looks like The Sims?

The video below features a play-by-play reenactment of Tiger Woods’ scandal. Don’t fret if you can’t understand a word of Mandarin; there’s nothing particularly earth shattering here. But do keep your eyes open for a hilariously awkward shower scene and a Grand Theft Auto-style ‘bouncing car.’

Apple Daily’s parent company, Next Media, plans to open five TV stations in Taiwan (no doubt to expand their 3D reenactments) but are hitting a brick wall. The New York Times reports that the dispute centers around the exposure of violent or adult content to children as well as concerns about journalistic integrity. There’s a whole debate about media and censorship in here somewhere but I could care less.

The bottom line is the clips are far more entertaining than what probably actually happened with Tiger Woods and makes me incredibly curious what their other reenactments are like. No doubt, they are filled with greedy politicians with money signs for eyes and beautiful women on each arm.
