Life

I haven’t written much about life, games, and everything else these last few days because I’ve been moving. To be more specific, I moved into a new apartment on Saturday. Actually, between all the boxing, unboxing, cleaning, and commitments, I’d say the whole thing lasted about 3 full days. But now, the hardest part is over and its back to blogging for me. (Major props to my brother for driving up from Santa Cruz to help me lift heavy furniture into the U-Haul.)

Migrating from duplex, the smaller living quarters will take some adjusting to. I already miss the convenience of a garage, personal bathroom, washing machine, and dryer. But the silver lining is I’m being forced to throw away some things.

I have terrible pack rat tendencies which I believe originate from years of hearing from my parents that all things no matter how insignificant have their use in the universe. You may not see it now; but when the right time coms along, you’ll be glad you kept all that junk. While I still believe that’s true, my new philosophy is: “If I need something, I can always buy a new one.” Also, watching the George Clooney flick Up in the Air has convinced me that there is freedom in owning as few possessions as possible. Yes, my life is guided by lessons from Hollywood.

In the almost four years I’ve been up in the Bay Area, I’ve amassed a lot of stuff. I can hardly believe back in 2007, my belongings all fit inside a sedan. Now, I could barely fit them inside a U-Haul.

The feeling of dropping old baggage is very refreshing. It also helps you reminisce about funny events from your past. When I was cleaning, I found a box of my law school acceptance letters from 2007. If I had decided to go, my life would be very different now. I also found a bunch of envelopes filled with photos from Yearbook class in high school. Talk about old-school.

You may remember from my post about the Robot Masters white board next to my workspace that there’s a Mario display on the back wall of my cubicle. Unfortunately, I’m moving to a new location this week. So that means I have to take down the Mario decorations.

I thought it’d be nice to take a few pictures of the Mario decorations before removing them forever.

My girlfriend thought it’d be a good idea for us to make some art with tempera paint. So we went to the local drugstore and bought some. I haven’t painted in years. But I do remember is that tempera paint is pretty much the cheapest, most horrible type of paint available. Sure enough, the paint dried too fast and we couldn’t blend or layer the colors effectively. The end result isn’t a complete trainwreck, but like an impressionist painting, you have to view it from a distance.

On Christmas Day, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab tried to blow up a plane with explosive powder in his underwear. He failed, set himself on fire, and was wrestled to the ground by courageous passengers on a flight without an air Marshall.

Fast forward to my return trip, two days later from London Heathrow to SFO, with a stay in Toronto. The flight from Heathrow to Toronto was easy enough. There were no delays and nothing out of the ordinary. We simply had to wait for the plane to defrost.

The final leg of our journey was a 9:25a flight from Toronto to SFO with an overnight stay in the airport. We were informed from the website that everyone should get to the airport early to avoid missing the flight; so we didn’t get much sleep. When we landed in Toronto, it was already 11:00p EST. The restaurants were closed and we were hungry and thirsty.

Should we sleep a bit before the morning? Alas, we noticed people getting in line already at 2:30a. So we followed them to get our bags tagged. (Only one carry on was allowed per passenger).

Then we waited until 7:00a for the pre-clearance so we could go through US Customs. I tried to stay awake without coffee but my girlfriend kept dozing off. The staff called groups to the door by flight number so one of us had to stay vigilant. Once inside, it was another hour of waiting and questioning. That was followed by a thorough bag check and paper check. Then, we went to the terminals for a physical pat down and underwear inspection. But we reached our designated gate and realized Air Canada had changed the gate on us. The new gate was on the other side of the airport, with a much longer line! So we ran down there, had to go through physical inspection again, and finally made it to the gate minutes before takeoff. Thankfully the flight was delayed for 30 minutes.

The remaining 6 hours was spent on the flight back to SFO, tired but relieved. We had no pillow and no blanket. Our hands had to be in plain sight. But I was so tired, I didn’t care.

To the terrorist who attempted to blow up the plane on Christmas Day and have caused so much trouble to international travelers, f*ck you. To the staff at Toronto and across the world who have had to adapt quickly to the sudden changes in security procedure, thank you.

At Toronto Airport, it was chaotic. But somehow, the staff managed to get most people to their flight. Not an easy job.

But now, I’m back in California. And boy, it feels good to be back. Sleep deprivation is terrible.

London Offbeat Oddities

Walking around London for a week, we ran into some things that made us scratch our heads. Most of it was related to puns, which the British enjoy very much. Others were strange warning signs related to transportation. Below are some of the other pictures we took that were kind of funny.

This was taken in an underground walkway connecting the Science Museum to the Tube station. More after the jump.

British Museum

And lo, we saved the biggest and best museum for last. The British Museum was the first grand museum in the world and contains priceless artifacts excavated, conquered, and stolen from countries across the globe. As such, there is an extensive search of all baggage upon entrance. The don’t want people trying to steal any artifacts back for their home country.

To the British Museum’s credit, the vast majority of exhibits are free of charge. And when you consider what happened to the Bamiyan Buddha statues, maybe it’s good the artifacts were taken and preserved for future generations before they could be blown up by radical iconoclasts.

More pictures inside after the jump.
