If you notice the site’s been acting funny today, it’s because I switched to a new host, Arvixe.
My previous host phpwebhosting.com was decent back in 2002 when I first opened my account. But in recent years, the constant downtime and lack of support has been bugging me. Downtime is an ugly and inevitable part of shared hosting. When you have 400 people sharing a server and one of those sites gets Digged, everyone suffers. But there are ways to mitigate it so it’s a non-issue, from a customer service perspective.
Today, the site and server went offline for three hours and during that time I couldn’t reach a single tech to resolve the issue. If this was an isolated incident, it would be no big deal. But in fact, monthly downtime has recently turned into weekly downtime. And it always happens in the middle of a post, causing me to lose all my writing. I contemplated switching hosts last year, but ended up staying because I didn’t have the energy to do research.
Enough is enough. I switched to Arvixe and in the 2 hours it took to get domains and databases transferred, I probably talked to their support team more than I ever did with phpwebhosting.com in 7 years. Their team was very helpful in helping me with mySQL and troubleshooting my WordPress installation. I’m also paying half what I used to pay for hosting and there’s actual 24/7 chat support.
Anyway, not all the kinks on the site have been worked out yet thanks to some incompatibilities. So if you see something broken, please email me.
